Below are the colours I picked out of the poster using Photoshop. 7 colour palette, a wider use of colours in comparison to the previous decades who used between 3 and 5 colours. Masse continues to produce pieces for contemporary performers. His choice of colour palette, unique lettering style and bold composition give his art a signature look.Īs rock concert art began to enjoy a surge in popularity during the 90’s, Masse returned to the medium with renewed force, producing a steady stream of posters for the first time since the 70’s. Masse’s designs reflect his interest in the art nouveau movement and he employs many of the techniques of that period. While attending art school in Vancouver, he began his career by designing posters for the folk acts which visited the town, in exchange for free drinks, tickets and the opportunity to meet the musicians.Īs folk became folk-rock and Vancouver was visited by bands such as The Grateful Dead, The Doors and Steve Miller, Masse continued to produce memorable concert posters for these bands, and helped pioneer the emerging psychedelic art genre. Masse is from an artist from Canada’s West Coast and has been producing music concert posters since the 1960’s. The sixth illustration I have chosen to analyse is the 1970 ‘Ten Years After’ poster (below), designed by Bob Masse. They might have thrived and become stable in the way that Europe recovered after World War II through the Marshall Plan however, their economic growth was slowed by the oil crisis but boomed immediately after. The economies of much of the developing world continued to make steady progress in the early 1970s, because of the Green Revolution. The continent was however plagued by military coups, civil wars and famine. Īfrica saw further decolonisation in the decade, with Angola and Mozambique gaining their independence in 1975 from the Portuguese Empire after the restoration of democracy in Portugal. The 1970s saw an initial increase in violence in the Middle East as Egypt and Syria declared war on Israel, but in the late 1970s, the situation in the Middle East was fundamentally altered when Egypt signed the Egyptian–Israeli Peace Treaty. In the United Kingdom the 1979 elections resulted in the victory of its Conservative Party under Margaret Thatcher, the first and to date only female British Prime Minister. In the Western world, social progressive values that began in the 1960s, such as increasing political awareness and political and economic liberty of women, continued to grow. Historians have increasingly portrayed the 1970’s as a “pivot of change” in world history focusing especially on the economic upheavals.
